Proper set-up is a major factor in playability, so buying from a string specialist rather than a guitar store with a few violins in the back is essential. Expect to pay at least $200 for a halfway decent violin. The violins that cost less than $100 are complete junk. Go to a reputable string store and see what they have. From what I've seen, students who are still playing their beginner instruments when they get to an advanced intermediate stage get pretty frustrated with them.
